Preview for the next chapter (which will hopefully be updated soon if MTV and my schedule align). Bare in mind this is not the final cut of the scene in the next chapter but still a rough draft.
Spoiler: Show
In the limousine, Diana wore an elegant violet dress with a small necklace that contained a matching stone. She didn’t have her Amazon bracelets on. In fact, like the rest of her Amazonian armor, she hadn’t worn them in a long time because the past few years she had focused more on her ambassadorial duties than her time on the League. Erik meanwhile, wore a simple black tuxedo and bow tie. He let his blond locks of hair still hang wildly though. They awkwardly and silently sat in the limo until it pulled up to Lord’s estate in Paris. Diana could see through the tinted windows the flashes from the cameras. She had secretly hoped the paparazzi wouldn’t appear for a random gala. It would have been nice if she could’ve at least entered the party without the media and public knowing about it. Erik seemed to have sensed her disappointment and gripped her hand with his. She didn’t look back at him and just stared out the window as the vehicle remained idling.

“You don’t have to do this,” Erik encouraged. “We can back out right now.”

“I can’t go back,” Diana refuted and she closed her eyes to compose herself. “Let’s do this.”

They both walked out of the limousine and made their way up the red carpet to the mansion. The house itself looked more like a museum than an actual residence. It had so many windows and floors, it even made Wayne Manor look small in comparison. Through the windows, she could see various, lavish decorations inside and curiously wondered if Lord actually even lived there or used the place solely for parties and celebrations. Right above the front door, where beefy security guards scanned the invitations of the new arrivals, was a gaudy banner that ruined the otherwise majestic appearance of the house like a blemish on a face. Erik silently offered to take Diana’s arm, but she remained standing still while staring at the building.

“Let’s go,” Erik urged and walked to the front door, right through the middle of the paparazzi storm. Diana quickly followed him. At first, no one in the paparazzi seemed to have noticed or recognized them. But, one rather short photographer noticed Erik and squealed loudly.

“Erik Bronson!” she shouted. All eyes immediately turned towards them and the flashes increased. Erik smiled sheepishly and waved a little, but it didn’t stop the crowd from noticing Diana was still with him.

“Madame Ambassador!” a Frenchman shouted. “Has there been any charges for your role in the murder of Ambassador Vox?”

“Is there any truth to the rumors you two are postponing the wedding?” another one asked.

“What do you have to say about your fiancée’s career tanking because of his association of you?” a rather loud, large man asked. “His music and ticket sales have plummeted in the last week!”

Erik scowled at that and put his arm around Diana who felt like a deer in the headlights.

“Let’s get out of here,” he encouraged. She let him lead her up the carpet as the paparazzi continued to mercilessly hound her with questions. The security guard grabbed their invitations and began to scan them. Diana noticed he eyed her a fraction of a second longer than he needed to. They would probably catch more people staring at her curiously or with suspicion inside. Maybe Erik was right and they shouldn’t have come here. The light turned green on the scanner and the guard stepped aside to let them in. Before they could walk up the last remaining steps, one member of the mob got his question heard above the buzz.

“Care to comment on your relationship with Audrey the Awful?” someone asked. “Did you actually kill her in the Kasnian War to keep your relationship a secret?”

Diana froze and felt the whole world blur around her. She could see the fires and hear the screams, but she also thought back the first time she had visited Paris. During that trip, she had met Audrey and the two became friends. She also had the paparazzi hounded her there as well, but they were never this vicious. At this point, Diana didn’t know what she was doing and slowly turned around to stare at the swarm still shouting and flashing at her. Her mind raced with thoughts of Paris, Audrey, war, Kasnia, and even Bruce…

“Mr. Bronson!” a voice shouted, snapping Diana out of her daze. She looked back up to see exiting the front door was a middle aged man. His hair looked way younger for his age, despite some gray on the sides. His face had a fake tan and was ridiculously smooth complimented by an abnormally white grin. Diana recognized him as Maxwell Lord. She did remember him from the whole Ultimen incident, but that was a decade ago and Lord didn’t have as much plastic surgery to make himself look younger.

“Maxwell Lord,” he introduced himself to her fiancée and offered his hand. Erik shook it awkwardly.

“And it is good to see you again Ambassador Diana,” he noted and kissed her on the cheek. “I’m so honored that you two have decided to come.”

“We are too,” Diana said politely, but not comfortably. Lord glanced over Diana and acted as if he just noted the vicious mob of the paparazzi that was still hounding the couple.

“Ah yes, the vultures are out,” Lord replied. “Ignore them. They won’t be allowed inside. Please, follow me.”

The two quickly followed the man into his estate. As they walked, he kept talking to them.

“I apologize for you two having to run through the gauntlet like that. For what it’s worth, I don’t believe the trash the tabloids have been saying about you two.”

“You’re too kind,” Diana said sarcastically. She thought Lord’s kind words lacked authenticity. They seemed to be as fake as his face.

“I’m glad you both decided to come. Tonight, Cyber Industries will unveil a lot of new plans for the coming year, including our new Nuclear Energy Initiative.”

“So I’ve heard,” Erik muttered bitterly which Lord failed to pick up on.

“We also want to get on the green train here. With climate change and fossil fuels sparking conflict, this company seeks to help make more harmless and efficient ways to obtain energy. An endorsement from two well-known environmentalists like yourselves would help garner more support and publicity.”

“I don’t think I’d be a good endorsement for the time being,” Diana admitted. “With the UN rejecting my environmental treaty, my name with environmentalism won’t carry much weight.”

They had made a left towards what Diana assumed to be a ballroom. Her heightened senses could pick up the sounds of laughter and talking along with the smell of gourmet food and rich perfume. She then realized Erik had responded to Lord as well.

“Don’t take this personal, I’m more interested in wind and solar,” Erik reminded. “I’m skeptical when big corporations like yours jump on the bandwagon. I’ve heard the stories of rich fat cats cutting standards on nuclear power safety to save a few bucks.”

Lord let out a laugh, but it sounded awkwardly forced. They reached the doorway which Diana assumed led to the ballroom. He paused, and placed a hand on a handle while looking at his two guests.

“Give me tonight, and I’ll have you changing on your opinion of nuclear power. Wind and solar are nice, but nuclear power is the the best option out there. Cyber Industries will guide the world on that path.”

He then opened the door and ushered them into the ballroom. Diana looked around and noticed it was very modern in design despite the quaint appearance on the outside. Already guests flooded the room. Many sipped champagne and socialized while others ate the cocktail food at the buffet. A few sharply dressed men played instruments in the corner as a few guests danced too on the floor.

“Enjoy yourself and feel free to mingle,” Lord encouraged and wandered off. Diana and Erik looked around before Erik suggested they try to get some drinks. As they walked around the ballroom, Diana could feel as if all eyes were on her. She turned around to look behind and saw some people quickly look the other way. Other guests didn’t bother to make an attempt and just stared back at her. As she and Erik approached a bartender and Erik gave their requests, Diana noticed the once crowded area around the bar seemed to have dispersed. It was as if everyone had kept their distance from her. Her hearing picked up a few scant conversations.

“I can’t believe he’s still with that whore.”

“She’s a liar and murderer, you saw the stories.”

“It’s a shame such a great man like Mr. Bronson ruined his career by being engaged to her.”

“Do you think he would’ve proposed to her if he knew the truth?”

Diana knew she had to ignore all the whispers and stares, but it didn’t make it any easier. She closed her eyes and felt a single tear fall out of her left eye. A part of her wanted to break down and cry. But, she knew she had to be strong and fight back as an Amazon. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of getting to her. Wiping the tear away she opened her eyes and noticed Erik was talking to a group of people. It seemed while everyone wanted to stay clear from her, some people seem interested in talking to Erik still at least. Cautiously, she walked up to the group and stood right next to Erik. Some of the guests in the group immediately noticed her presence and looked at her uncertainly while others pretended to not have seen her yet.

“Oh I’m sorry,” Erik apologized and put his arm tightly around her. “This my fiancé, Diana.”

“Pleasure to meet you,” an old woman greeted as she sipped on her drink. A couple of other guests greeted her with forced politeness.

“Anyways, as I was saying,” a man with a thin, black moustache droned on. “I’d like you to try one of our newest helicopter models. I know you as an aviation enthusiast love to fly around.”

“What’s the range for it?” Diana asked curiously, desperate to have some conversation so she could ignore the whispers about her. The man glanced at her briefly, before looking at Erik again.

“Anyways, I can have my people contact you and give you a free test ride. If you like it enough, a promotion by you would be very helpful for-”

“Excuse me,” Diana cut in bluntly. “I asked you a question, you should do me the courtesy of at least answering.”

“We already extended you a courtesy by allowing you to attend this event,” the man snapped back. Before Diana could retort, Erik walked up closer to him. Diana didn’t realize how tall he was compared to the rude man until he stood up right next to him.

“Talk like that to her again,” Erik threatened. “And I’ll make you regret it.”

The man gulped and stammered a little.

“So-so sorry Mr. Bronson-I-“

“Apologize to her, not me,” Erik ordered quietly. The man looked over at Diana and squeaked out a nervous apology. He then pretended he had to go somewhere else and scampered away. The rest of the group looked at them awkwardly.

“Let’s go,” Erik encouraged and escorted her away from the group. Diana let out a sigh with relief.

“Thank you for that,” she said gratefully. “I was about to deck him.”

“I was too,” Erik admitted. “Figured though better for me to take the heat than you.”
“Coming here was a mistake,” Diana admitted ruefully.

“Don’t let them get to you, they can all fu-"

“Can I have your attention please?”
a voice through a microphone announced. Erik and Diana looked to see a rather short lady was at the podium on the stage in the ballroom.

“Thank you all for coming to Cyber Industries’ 1st Annual Exposition Gala. We hope you will enjoy your time here so far. And remember, all drinks are free tonight.”

There were a few cheers and chuckles from the crowd, but none from Erik or Diana.

“And now, let me introduce our gracious host and CEO, Maxwell Lord.”

Lord, like a dyed peacock, strutted up the stairs to the podium.

“Thank you Cindy. Welcome everyone to my home!”
he announced as a big projector screen began to rise up behind him. “The past twenty years, Cyber Industries has not only grown in value exponentially, but has continued a tradition of innovation and ingenuity. Tonight, we will be showing you are prototypes and plans for our future projects.”

Diana noticed a bunch of men in tuxedos began to unload a bunch of poster boards and unfold some tables around the stage.

“From its humble origins in the 1970’s as a small Kasnian company owned by a member of the exiled Kasnian royal family, Cyber Industries has evolved into the 21st century as the fastest growing industry in all fields. From technology, to medicine, from energy, and security.”

Diana didn’t like the way Lord said security. It was as if there was a double meaning behind that word. She then saw two men carrying something heavy that was covered with a blanket. They gently lowered the object on one of tables.

“Particularly energy is where we’ve made our strides lately though. Under my tutelage, Cyber Industries has realized the importance of helping the environment while simultaneously achieving cheaper, more efficient energy. We have developed something that will make us a household name for generations. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you…the future!”

The cloth was lifted from the object on the table as the other displays had their covers taken down. Meanwhile, the big screen behind Lord showed what looked like a gigantic nuclear power plant on an island. Many in the audience gasped and Diana out of the corner of her eye could see Erik grind his teeth in rage.

“This is the Lotus Eater. The first ever nuclear-power industrial complex. A nuclear nation if you will. Not only is this the largest nuclear plant in history, this entire island has been converted to a factory as well. Imagine an entire island completely self-sustaining in energy and large enough to engineer so many products and technology. The sheer size of this complex will have more economic output than half of the world’s countries combined. Almost an entire civilization devoted to-"

“Don’t you know who I am?!” a loud drunk voice slurred across the ballroom. Everyone looked the other way to see a commotion happening at the entrance. Some security guards, including the couple Diana saw out front, had surrounded what appeared to be a man and two girls. Like the man, the two girls seemed equally intoxicated. They
giggled shrilly at the man’s comments.

“Sir, this is-“

“I’m Bruce fucking Wayne!” the man shouted. “I don’t need an invitation!”
